Vineyards in Bizkaia
The land, the Atlantic climate and the varieties that shape our txakolis.
THE VINEYARD
The land, the Atlantic climate and the varieties that shape our txakolis
At Txakoli Uriarte, the character of our wines begins in the vineyard. The land, the proximity of the sea and the care devoted to each plot are part of a way of working that is deeply rooted in Bizkaia.
Our surroundings
A vineyard in Bizkaia
Our vineyards lie on south-facing slopes, below 300 metres above sea level and close to the coast, in plots of two or three hectares.
This location, together with the Atlantic influence, allows the vines to grow in surroundings that bring freshness, balance and a personality closely linked to the landscape of Bizkaia.
Atlantic climate
The influence of the sea and the wind
The north-westerly wind and the warmth of the southerly wind during summer and early autumn play a fundamental role in ripening the grapes.
This combination of humidity, freshness and gradual ripening is one of the keys to the lively, fruity and balanced character of our txakolis.
The land and the varieties
Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza
The principal variety in our vineyard is Hondarrabi Zuri, a native white grape that accounts for most of the planting. Alongside it, Hondarrabi Beltza, a red variety, completes the personality of our wines. We also grow smaller quantities of varieties such as Petit Manseng, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Folle Blanche, which add nuance, complexity and aromatic richness to the winemaking process.
The soils are clay-rich, slightly acidic and shallow, with abundant organic matter—conditions that help express the character of the vineyard and the identity of each vintage.
Work in the vineyard
Care, observation and time
Every vintage begins with caring for the vineyard. Attention to the vines, observation of the growing cycle and choosing the right moment for the harvest mark the beginning of the whole process.
Planting density, between 2,500 and 3,300 vines per hectare, and yield control allow us to maintain a balance between production and quality.
Origin and assurance
Bizkaiko Txakolina
Our wines are made under the Bizkaiko Txakolina Designation of Origin, which guarantees their provenance and authenticity, as well as compliance with the quality controls established by the Regulatory Council.
The maximum authorised production is 13,000 kg per hectare, a benchmark that helps preserve the balance of the vineyard and the final quality of the wine.
The origin of our wines
Our txakolis are born in the vineyard
Hondarrabi Zuri gives rise to fresh, lively wines with a distinctly Atlantic expression. Hondarrabi Beltza offers another view of the vineyard, producing wines with fruity notes and a personality of their own.
In every one of them, the vineyard is always present: in the freshness, the balance and the identity found in each glass.
Our outlook
The vineyard as the origin of everything
At Txakoli Uriarte, we understand the vineyard as the origin of everything: the grape, the wine and a way of working that brings together land, climate, tradition and dedication.
Every plot, every variety and every vintage forms part of a story that lives on in our wines and in the way we share the essence of Bizkaia.
